PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
-
2000: AIT Professional
Seminar Trainer with authorization by Dr. Guy Bérard to instruct
professional practitioners in AIT.
-
1999: Government registration as Health Care Psychologist (BIG
geregistreerd GZ psycholoog)
-
1995: Trained by Dr. Guy Bérard as an AIT practitioner.
-
1975: Graduation as clinical child psychologist from the University of Groningen, Netherlands.
-
My first experience with AIT was in 1992 with my daughter, then 8
years old, who was diagnosed with classical autism, uncontrollable seizures and
severe dyspraxia.
-
Since her diagnosis in 1986, I studied autism and started my
search for ways to help her. Among all the interventions we used (holding
therapy, dietary interventions, sensory stimulation according to Delacato,
Facilitated communication) AIT was one of the best.
-
After my daughter had AIT twice in the US, the first time with
Stephen Edelson, now director of the Autism Research Institute and the second
time with Sally Brockett (IDEA Training Center in Connecticut), I was
disappointed that AIT was still not available in The Netherlands and decided to
become an AIT practitioner myself.
-
Since then I have seen amazing results with children as well as
adults with different types of auditory processing disorders, sensitive/painful
hearing, dyslexia, speech-language problems (often in children that suffered
from ear infections at an early age), inability to filter sounds, problems with
auditory memory, and so on.
-
Before the AIT training, clients are offered a urine test to detect if
there is an indication for a gluten and casein free diet. Reason for this is
that the consumption of gluten can have a negative influence on auditory
processing, which is very often seen in children with ASD. If a child needs this
diet and the parents are not aware of the problem, there is a substantial risk
that the results obtained by AIT will disappear within a few months after the
training. The urine is sent to a laboratory in Oslo, Norway, where special tests
were developed to detect this problem.
-
During the training there is time to discuss and work on other
problems. One of the things I very often encounter are eating problems in
children with ASD caused by hyper or hypo sensitivity to taste and/or smell. In
those cases we start exercises for taste and smell which the parents continue at
home after finishing the AIT training.
-
Providing AIT for those who need it has been very rewarding so
far and I hope to be able to continue to do so for a long time.
