"After Berard AIT his echolalia has been gradually disappearing since we did the training."

Auditory Integration Training, AIT, Berard AIT, echololia"We took our son to do Berard AIT. I never would have tried it, since there are so many interventions competing for parents’ time, and I’m a bit of a skeptic. But my sister had had a head injury about 7 years ago and the way my son acted in crowds reminded me of her – my previously stable sister would run crying out of parties in frustration from all the noise, for instance. Well, someone told her about Berard AIT about a year before we had our son, and within 3 days she said she realized she could walk in a Mc Donald’s and enjoy the hustle bustle—something that she hadn’t done since the injury! So I called our Berard AIT practitioner, who had assisted my sister, to see if it was tried for autism, and of  course we learned it was.

One tip: We told our son the earphones you wear were ear phones for PILOTS. This made him very excited to try them. And our Berard AIT practitioner had great toys for him to play with. I recommend before bringing the child you get him accustomed to some of those padded,  very comfortable ear phones and make it a game. I wouldn't connect them to anything. I just think it would help with one of the hurdles.

I believe that Berard AIT caused a great deal of improvement, but we happened to do 3-4 interventions at once so I can’t be 100% sure how much of it was Berard AIT.

However, there is one thing that it cured, that I know for sure was cured by Berard AIT, and it’s very important: Our son used to have this delay responding. If he was playing with a bear and a car, and you would say "Pick up the bear and give it to me” he would keep playing with the bear and car for a short while as if he didn’t hear you or understand you. It was a long enough time that it took a while for me to even see this pattern. Suddenly, he’d give you the bear, or accurately do whatever it was I’d requested.

After the Berard AIT, if you did the same experiment, he would either immediately give you the bear, (or immediately say “No!”). So this delay was gone.  You can imagine how this type of delay processing would cause someone to have difficulty with normal back and forth conversation and interaction.

After Berard AIT, his echolalia has been gradually disappearing since we did the training.

We did the Berard AIT at the age of 3 years 3 months. I was embarrassed because he was so fidgety the first two times but the Berard AIT Practitioner was willing to do it if we were, and  lo and behold, he ended up liking it and it worked great!
